Horizons in Hemophilia, October 2024
Samantha A. noticed her 10-month-old son, Parker, had a small amount of blood in his mouth one day as he was teething, and figured he just had a minor cut that would naturally heal soon. To her surprise, the bleeding didn’t stop. Within a few hours, she had taken him to the hospital because his entire face and head were covered in blood.
Hemophilia of Georgia (HoG) staff, clients, and volunteers attended the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation’s 76th Annual Bleeding Disorders Conference at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta from September 12-14, 2024. HoG sent four client families via a travel grant, three volunteers, and many staff members to the conference for three incredible days of educational sessions, networking opportunities, and exciting exhibits.
This year, October 20-26 is National Pharmacy Week, a time to celebrate the invaluable contributions pharmacists and technicians make to patient care. As always, Hemophilia of Georgia’s Pharmacy team remains dedicated to personalized, comprehensive care services specifically tailored to meet the needs of people with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
Employers and employees continue to face the challenge of rising costs of health insurance. Another challenge is it is difficult for many people to understand today’s complex insurance plans. Often, employees will ask someone in their Human Resources (HR) department who is responsible for creating their benefits package. This person is usually guided by a consultant or someone at the insurance company in creating a plan that helps employees while controlling employer costs.
Our annual Tee Off for Bleeding Disorders Golf Tournament (formerly known as Hit ‘Em for Hemophilia will take place on October 14th. Open enrollment for marketplace health insurance plans begins November 1, 2024. This year, Georgia residents will enroll on the new Statebased Exchange called Georgia Access. This exchange will replace the previous federally run Healthcare.gov. Starting November 1, Georgian’s can shop, compare and enroll in their healthcare plans for 2025 on www.georgiaaccess.gov.
