Junior Board Spotlight: Martez Favis
By Ashley Swan, HoG Junior Board of Directors
Martez G. Favis is a native of Albany, Georgia who works for the Dougherty County School System as an Instructional Specialist. He is currently studying for a Master of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He enjoys singing, event planning, traveling, and eating at different types of restaurants. He was named Teacher of the Year 2015 at Sherwood Acres Elementary Magnet School in Albany and was also named as a Top Eight Finalist for Dougherty County School System Teacher of the Year. One of his greatest accomplishments is the founding of R.E.A.L. Boys R.E.A.L. Men Mentoring Program which celebrates five years of existence in August. The program exposes boys between the ages of 8 and 12 to life apart from what they normally experience. These boys come from single parent households, low income families, have negative behavioral issues, low academic performance and/or have social deficits. They are taught the value of hard work, education and the importance of making good choices.
Martez began volunteering with Hemophilia of Georgia in 2007 as a Camp Wannaklot counselor and the experience profoundly changed him. He has a strong passion for children and their success. He has served as a lead counselor, camp planning team member, and Leaders in Training counselor. He is a founding member of the HoG Junior Board. Martez joined the board in an effort to be the face and voice for children and adults who are living with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. He lives by the motto of “Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” Martez believes that the only obstacle that can impede greatness is death.
