Zach’s Weight Loss Success
Horizons in Hemophilia, October 2012

Zach C. had been concerned about his weight for years. The 17-year-old with severe hemophilia A always had sore joints, even though he treated with factor concentrate every other day. This past spring, when he reached 185 pounds, he decided to do something about it.
He started with his diet. He gave up junk food and soft drinks. The first two weeks were the hardest but then he started to see the benefits. Zach had set a goal of losing ten pounds but when he met that, he kept at it. He ran for exercise. Never on asphalt - because he didn't want to put more strain on his ankles and knees - but always on dirt or mulch. He wound up losing 30 pounds! Zach feels better and notices much less soreness in his joints.
His family started eating healthier also. Smaller portions for everyone meant that they lost weight too. According to Betsy, Zach's mom, "Eating healthy was not easy or cheap but it made such a difference. Every one of us has benefitted. Zach's end result has made him so happy."
Zach's advice for others looking to lose weight is to start with your diet: "Don't not eat. Don't eat when you're bored. Eat when you need to - little portions." He eats lunch in the cafeteria at his high school but doesn't overeat, often choosing a slice of pizza and a piece of fruit.
Zach continues to run and plays basketball with his friends. His weight loss has had another effect. "Everyone has noticed. It makes you feel good."
Be sure to check with your hematologist or primary care physician before beginning an exercise program.
