Mighty Sticker – Mighty Mario!
Horizons in Hemophilia, August 2009
By Gelene Doolittle, RN, Outreach Nurse |
Mario is an 8 year old with moderate factor VIII deficiency. He attends the Backus HTC in Savannah. Mario came to the med lodge on Monday at camp to watch a couple of people do their own infusions and to get his done. After watching his counselor Justin, Mario exclaimed “that looks easy – I can do that!” and he did three times at camp.
Mario was born in Savannah. He is in the 3rd grade and will be home-schooled this year. He loves underwater life and has a pet tortoise named Tug. Mario stays active and especially loves to swim. His family calls him a fish out of water. Mario is a compassionate young man who cares deeply for the people in his life.
You might be surprised to know Mario is a TV star. He did a segment for the Children’s Miracle Network that was accompanied by an article in the local paper. While in Wal-Mart one day, Mario was recognized and was asked to sign an autograph!
Mario, we are all very proud of your accomplishment! If you’re interested in learning to self-infuse, contact your outreach nurse or hemophilia clinic for information on how to get started.
