Amicar® for Home and School

Published September 12, 2011

Horizons in Hemophilia, September 2011

By Leigh Carpenter, RPh, Director of Pharmacy

Many doctors recommend that people who have bleeding disorders keep Amicar® on hand for unexpected mouth bleeds.  Now that children are back in school, some parents are thinking about keeping Amicar® at home and at their child’s school or daycare.

Some insurance companies will not pay for “double orders” but there is an easy way to get two bottles when you have your prescription filled.  When you place your order with the pharmacy, ask to have the Amicar® dispensed in two bottles.  For example, if your doctor prescribes 8 ounces of Amicar®, ask the pharmacy to send out two bottles of 4 ounces each (or if you don’t know the specific volume amount, just say you need two bottles).  This also comes in handy if you want to keep some at a grandparents’ house as well.  HoG and Beacon Pharmacies cannot send out labels for you to stick on a bottle you already have at home, but will be happy to dispense your prescribed amount in two bottles.

It’s always better to have some Amicar® on hand just in case, instead of finding yourself without any in an emergency.    Amicar® is available in both tablets and syrup, and the generic name is Aminocaproic Acid.  Please call the pharmacy if you have any questions.
